The Import Export (IE) Code is a mandatory registration for individuals involved in importing or exporting goods and services from India. It is issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), which operates under the Ministry of Commerce and Industries, Government of India. Once obtained, an IE Code remains valid for the entity’s entire existence and does not require any filing or renewal. Consequently, many organizations opt to obtain an IE Code, irrespective of their immediate need for it.
To apply for an IE Code, one must submit the necessary supporting documents and attachments to the Directorate General of Foreign Trade.

IEC Stands for IMPORTER EXPORTER CODE. No export or import shall be made by any person without an importer-exporter Code (IEC) number unless specifically exempted.
IEC is compulsory for imports. Although certain categories of importers are exempted from getting IEC.
All applications will be processed and disposed of within two working days of their receipt. All IEC Certificates would be issued by the concerned RA (with his digital signature) in digital format only. The applicant can take a printout of the digitally signed IEC, as and when required. There is no provision for the issue of deficiency letters in the new system. If the IEC application is declined, the applicant would be required to file a new application.
