Filed Isn't Finished: The 30-Day e-Verification Rule That Quietly Invalidates Returns

Filing is step one — verification is what makes it count

Thousands of taxpayers submit their return, breathe a sigh of relief, and never realise the job isn't done. Until you verify your return, it is legally incomplete. Miss the deadline and the law treats your return as never filed — refund forfeited, due date potentially missed, and you back to square one. The rule is simple but unforgiving: verify within 30 days of filing.

The 30-day window

You must verify your ITR within 30 days of the date of filing. If you verify within 30 days, the date of filing is treated as your return date. If you verify after 30 days, the date of verification becomes the filing date — which can turn an on-time return into a belated one, attracting a Section 234F fee and loss of certain benefits like carry-forward of losses. The clock starts at submission, so verify immediately.

The six ways to e-verify, ranked by speed

  1. Aadhaar OTP — instant, if your mobile is linked to Aadhaar. The fastest and most popular.
  2. Net banking — log in to your bank's net banking and select the e-verify option; quick and reliable.
  3. Bank account EVC — generate an Electronic Verification Code through a pre-validated bank account.
  4. Demat account EVC — same idea, through a pre-validated demat account.
  5. Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) — required for audit cases; instant for those who have one.
  6. Physical ITR-V — sign and post the ITR-V to CPC Bengaluru. Slowest, dependent on post, and risky against the 30-day clock — use only as a last resort.

For almost everyone, Aadhaar OTP settles it in under a minute.

The trap that catches careless filers

The classic mistake is filing on the last day, 31 July, and assuming you are done — then forgetting to verify. The return sits unverified, the 30 days lapse, and the system later treats it as invalid or belated. A second trap is an unlinked Aadhaar mobile: if your number has changed, Aadhaar OTP fails and people give up. Pre-validate a bank account in advance so you always have a fallback.

What to do if you forgot to verify

If you realise an old return was never verified, you can request a condonation of delay for verification through the portal with a reason, or — for a still-open year — simply file again and verify promptly. The cleaner path is never to let it lapse: verify the moment you file.

The bottom line

Submission and verification are two separate acts. Verify within 30 days, use Aadhaar OTP or net banking for speed, keep a pre-validated bank account as backup, and never let 31 July filing lull you into skipping the final, decisive step.

Pune note

Pune filers: don't let the last step trip you up. Every season we meet Pune taxpayers who filed on 31 July, felt done, and never verified — only to find months later that their return was treated as invalid. At RDA Tax Advisory Services, Baner, verification is built into our filing process: the moment your return is submitted, we e-verify it on the spot, usually by Aadhaar OTP, and confirm the acknowledgement to you. For clients whose Aadhaar mobile has changed — common after a relocation to Pune — we pre-validate a bank account as a fallback so verification never stalls. We also rescue old unverified returns through condonation requests where needed. If you filed yourself this year, send us your acknowledgement and we'll confirm it is verified and on record: Office No. 102, Snehraj Apartment, Baner, Pune 411045, or call +91 77570 45059. Filing without verifying is like signing a cheque and never handing it over — finish the job.

Common questions

Frequently asked.

How do I e-verify my ITR?
Via Aadhaar OTP, net banking, bank or demat EVC, DSC, or by posting a signed ITR-V to CPC — Aadhaar OTP is fastest.
What happens if I don't verify within 30 days?
The return is treated as never filed; verifying late makes the verification date the filing date, risking belated-return consequences.
Which e-verification method is fastest?
Aadhaar OTP, which completes in under a minute if your mobile is linked to Aadhaar.
Can I verify an old unverified return?
You can request a condonation of delay through the portal, or re-file and verify promptly for an open year.
Does the 30-day clock start at filing?
Yes — it runs from the date you submit the return, so verify immediately.
